* In a recent trash sort, 85% of the paper that was discarded had a clean side to it!   If you dont have a reuse bin for this type of paper, you can make one, or get one from us!  See our paper reuse page (OSC page)

* 1 ton of office paper = 24 trees!

* 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space is used for every ton of paper

* 40% of landfill space used is paper

 *  Making new paper from recycled paper uses 30-50% less energy than making paper from trees and it reduces contributions to air pollution by 95%.

*  Every ton of recycled office paper saves 380 gallons of oil.

Did you know this about the UC system??

AB939: This state legislation, passed in 1989, dictates that all counties in the state must reduce their waste by 50% by the year 2000.  Those who do not could face up to $10,000 per day fines.  The law covers all state facilities except the UC system.  

Berkeley, our host city is faced with counting the waste from the University within its geographical borders without having any ability to mandate diversion by the University. 

The City’s current recycling rate is approximately 40%; the campus rate is approximately 30%. Our wastestream, comprised of close to 33 tons of material a day, is over 50% paper.
